McGovern is introduced to Hollywood premiere-style applause and slowly descends a curving staircase onto a stage.

oh, I SO want that to be real.

I graduated from high school in 1976. Suffice to say that there was, in my home town, a woman who vowed to wear no other colors than red, white, and/or (thank goddess for that "or") blue the entire year.

You are so right: the 70's were deeply askew in many ways. People who could get a 20% mortgage thought that was lucky. I think Nixon in China is my favorite opera because the actual events depicted were the most upbeat thing to happen in ten years.

As labor historians will tell you, though, it was a good time, relatively speaking, to be in a union. The product -- see Detroit -- may not have been good, causing heartache later, but workers were better off than after Reagan took office. Also, it was a bright time for food culture in the United States.
