In-Classifying
The students in my first class today are presently working on an in-class writing assignment:
What are your cultural taste preferences? How have they changed over the years?
In discussing how they should respond to the second question, I told them, "Say you used to be really into unicorns." Then, after a long pause, I added, "And now you are into antelopes. That's something you need to tell me." I also gave the example of a hypothetical student who felt it was time to abandon a teenage fixation on the Jonas Brothers. And I made my gratuitous Hannah Montana reference for the day. As cpratt inspired me to declare, "Go me!"

I'm stealing this assignment for my classes.

I was blown away by the quality of the responses, actually. I know I led them with my comments about unicorns and antelopes, but it was more than worth it. Besides, didn't you once advocate indoctrinating students in a Politics Collective meeting?

Dr. Rubio ... indoctrinating students since 1988.

Did you see that you have a namesake on the Spanish men's basketball team?

(Not that it's an honor, given their slant-eyed sense of humor.)

Unfortunately, this isn't the first example of Spanish racism.

They're practically Italians!

And to think that the Germans would come off as relatively enlightened one day. . .

It was definitely time to retire my stupid and boring anti-German tendencies when I realized Spain was a candidate for most racist European country. Breaks my heart in lots of ways, since Spain is the only place outside the U.S. where I feel at home. Not that I've been that many places. And perhaps there's a connection between the racism of Spain and my own connection to the country, since in Spain I feel like I'm amongst people "like me." I hope I'm not a racist, but the happy-face beginnings of the hatred of difference may come when we identify too strongly with people "like me."

I felt the same way in Germany. When I was there, though, there was still enough of an aura hovering around recent history to induce more self-consciousness about racism than would be likely under less dramatic historical circumstances. Interestingly, I even felt like the stores were arranged like my mind.

I wish I were in the class. Just to hear people saying things like that.

I wish you were in a class of mine, too. And I wish I were in a class of yours. I miss taking classes.

They're kind of the same as the Wildcats.

::ducks::

Sorry for the delay in response. I'm on campus M-W-F at U of A.
