I can't determine whether this individual should be castigated or lauded for his lack of "participation" on that day....If I could answer the question "participation in WHAT, exactly," perhaps It'd be easier to formulate a reaction to this dude's lack of reaction. Perhaps the fact that this guy "teaches traditional japanese martial arts," indicates that he subscribes to a zen philosophy that tempers his reaction...this text even goes "meta" when we read the phrase "we each see in it a reflection, albeit darkly, of ourselves," which is interesting in that, what we all (presumably) saw via the TV that day, was "a reflection of ourselves"......maybe........

.....here I am reading this artifact as though it were Proust or something, and yet I can't help thinking that maybe it has an equal value as a cultural artifact.

Everything is a text to be read/analyzed. This would be the perfect thing to introduce to an ENGL 101 class in an attempt to get the students to start asking the right questions when reading texts.

Is "Hotel California" part of his metaphysics?
