Missing Foot Note
From Marcel Mauss, The Gift--
The gift is thus something that must be given, that must be received and that is, at the same time, dangerous to accept. The gift itself constitutes an irrevocable link especially when it is a gift of food (58)."

Marcel Mauss (one wonders if he's related to Mickey) elevated Durkheimian sociological analysis from dreary statistics to the level of poetry. Such a pity he didn't write more.

god, i bloody love marcel mauss.

now i am cutting and shutting with derrida on forgiveness (you can only forgive the unforgivable) and thinking about gifts being only gifts when the recipient doesn't know they are being given to - i am sure that is a *real* idea from somewhere - god knows where, my old reading is lost in a soup in my mind and i listen to so many different buddhists doing audio dharma that i often have no idea of the provenance of ideas any more.
