Diversity in the Marketplace
I'm at the toy store with Skylar, who is picking out a new Barbie. I could swear that the percentage of darker-skinned dolls has increased threefold since the last time she spent an extended period making a selection with me, roughly a year ago.Because this is Tucson, that means there's certainly more color on the shelves than in the aisles.

It certainly makes sense that we have the same diversity in dolls as we have in the human species. Knowing myself as I do, I know that if I were the possessor of dolls I would certainly have a wide range of ethnic types. :-)

I completely agree. Mattel has been trying to take things in that direction for a while. For one thing, if kids want more diversity, their parents will shell out more money. The thing that interests me, though, is that, while dolls of color have been available for quite some time, they are only now becoming a major presence in stores here. I have to think that Obama's victory has helped to change things at the retail level.
