Yes, I love the fence, how it's so flat, yet still crucial.

I was in the upper Shenandoah Valley when I took that shot, which is where the title comes from. That location was near the sight of Confederate general Stonewall Jackson's daring raids against Union forces. It also referred to the circumstances of my being there, since I had to leave my conference before giving my presentation and rush home to Maryland to see my mother in the ICU and be with my father.

I had been driving through the night from Louisville. As I headed up Interstate 81, the dawn started to break over the ridge of the Shenandoahs. Because of the extreme recent snowfall, though, I couldn't find a place to pull over to take photos. Finally, I stopped at a rest area and stomped past the portion reserved for trucks and through nearly four feet of snow to get the view documented in that photo.

I'd love to see you, BTW. It won't happen on this visit, since I have to be back home to watch my daughter by Wednesday afternoon. But I will almost certainly be returning to Maryland in the next month to provide support for my parents. When I do, I will be sure to let you know in advance so we can, I hope, meet for coffee or something.
