Thanks! Here's the quote, from the end of Invisible Man, that the title references, which originates in the protagonist's underground lair:
Being invisible and without substance, a disembodied voice, as it were, what else could I do? What else but try to tell you what was really happening when your eyes were looking through? And it is this which frightens me:

Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?
I'm brazenly decontextualizing the passage, of course, both in view of the racial content lacking in the image -- if on the margins of my mother's experience -- and in the play on "lower frequencies" as a designation for what gets used less frequently and thus clutters up the less traveled spaces of one's life. But Ellison's argument about invisibility seems to illuminate the experience of those who, because of their mental challenges, are rarely seen for their full humanity.
