I smiled at your reference to flâneurie, since a suburban shopping mall seems so unworthy of it. On the other hand, maybe it's a matter of making the most of what you -- that is, what we -- have. It's not a Parisian arcade, but . . .

On that note, I wonder what Walter Benjamin would make of the Tucson Mall? :)

I'm glad you smiled. I did want that exaggerated effect.

You know, though, I think our perception of the Arcades -- like Benjamin's -- is a function of their survival past their ideal expiration date. They became "living ruins". But when they were new, they had a lot in common with American malls of yore or perhaps even today.

Interestingly, the Tucson Mall is one of the ones that's actually doing better now than it was a few years back, both because the management has improved and because so many shoppers cross the border from Mexico.
