When I went and collected all of my uncle's worldly possessions from a storage space in Seattle I confronted a huge internal dilemma of what to keep and what to let go -- and it wasn't even my stuff! I ended up keeping all of his boxes of papers, which include meticulously type-written rough drafts of poems from 40 years ago... every version of every poem, tied together with twine in bundles. It seems amusing to me that when I moved from my recent home I had an easier time letting go of certain personal possessions of my own, but still couldn't seem to part with those.

I can totally understand that. Of course, the "heirloom" quality is greatly diminished if you don't know what the bundles are for or why they matter. And when everything was deliberately de-bundled, in preparation for subsequent reclassification, as was the case in my parents' house, the challenge of sorting is amplified enormously. It was everything I could so, despite my vows and inclinations, to not start indiscriminately throwing things away just to clear a space to think.
