Would the "Just kidding!" of the guards have been possible without consequences in the Ulbricht era? It seems such a harbinger. You wonder if the guards at Panmunjom have a sense of the future so many Western observers have been predicting as imminent over the past several decades.

Speaking of the Ulbricht era, did you like The Lives of Others? I was a watery mess at that final scene in the bookstore.

I really liked that movie. For all of the surveillance going on, so much of it was of the "volunteer" sort that there was a lot of room for jokes and grumbling -- as I recall, that was part of the screenplay -- in the 1980s. Still, I do wonder what would have happened if someone in our party had complained about the incident.

I suspect that things are different in North Korea, though I can't really pinpoint why that would be so. Perhaps it's just that Koreans are still fueled by animus against Japan, their sense of being condescended to by other powers. Germans at least have their Darth Vader phase to look back upon, however perverse that sounds.
