I'm sorry. I'd like to think you're being premature. And if that sounds presumptuous, I'm sorry about that, too, since I don't have the right.

Well, it depends how you look at it. Herculaneum is gone for good. But the soil that has begun accumulating on top of the entombed town should be really fertile.

The way I'm trying to see it from this day forward is that I'm content to let the past -- or at least the parts of it that are most painful to reflect upon -- lie concealed for a while beneath the surface. It can be excavated later, after the passage of time has made the artifacts there seem special instead of routine.

I guess what I'm saying, putting down the conceit, is that I think of this as a hopeful entry.

Lovely way to look at it.

Hey, thanks!

Ah. As a member of a family who updates their white board daily, I feel your pain. Those external nerve centers usually say it all...

They say a lot, those external nerve centers. I'm realizing the degree to which my life basically stopped in early 2005 or, to be more precise, stopped moving forward and began to disintegrate as a consequence. It feels good to acknowledge that fact and to declare the self that has been in suspended animation ever since dead. This is not to say that I'm averse to discerning continuities or that I believe the burden of the past will magically disappear overnight. But I've at least realized that I need to reconstruct myself so that what went so wrong with that Charlie doesn't keep going wrong in the future.

Genius. Spot-on.

That's nice of you to say. I sure hope that I can live up to my bold words. The potential for backsliding is not to be underestimated.

Both TJ's and Trader Joe's, I see.

;)

Maybe get some rubbing alcohol and wipe it clean. If you're going to look at it as a metaphor and all.

I might. But I worry that doing so now would be to remain caught up in a drama I'm trying to transcend or at least evade. Maybe I shouldn't wipe it clean until I have a reason to use it, you know?

Indeed. The doubling was one of the things that caught my eye when I was taking the photo. It's so weird to have looked at this whiteboard every single day for nearly six years without ever really seeing it.

Like the purloined letter, the thing I was looking for was staring me in the face the whole time.

Make small drawings of the items instead of writing their names. This makes all the difference. It's fun. Fun is where it's at.

They don't have much fun in Herculaneum these days. Nobody there draws shopping lists anymore.

That's a good idea!

You're right that Herculaneum isn't much fun. Having spent the past five years there, I'm amazed that something is still left over to compose this entry.

;-)
