It was so nice to have an island of Dutchness, however ephemeral, amid the desiccation of this environment.

I love your photo riddles, rarely as I'm able to crack them. They remind me of emails I get from a friend up north, which are thicketed with puns, arcane references, and nightmarishly inventive punctuation. He might as well be writing in Etruscan most of the time. His Christmas card was such a mindf_ck that he had to send a followup email explaining it!

I think that's the hardest thing to communicate, as I navigate this time of my biggest life crisis to date, the fact that the maddening indirectness that readers of my Live Journal used to complain about wasn't simply the product of practical concerns or a failure to confront reality head on -- though both were obviously factors -- but a way for me to exercise my mind in the way that gives me the most pleasure. Like those Old English poems that take the form of riddles in which the point is to guess the subject and ponder the double entendres it enables, my subject headers are an invitation to join me in the adventure of interpretation for the fun of it. Maybe that sounds pretentious, but it's what I feel.

Do you have this in higher resolution? This photograph is amazingly beautiful.

I do. Not that the megapixels mean that much, but the original was a 12MP RAW file shot with my new Panasonic G10 micro four-thirds body and the 14-45mm kit zoom it came with.

Thank you! It's so hard to get the detail in the shadows without using the glow. I was very lucky to have just the right light and enough water to balance out the sky. The scene reminds me of one of those Dutch landscape painters from the seventeenth century, like Ruisdael.
