Photographs That Make Me Proud (First in a Series)
I still haven't made meaningful headway on the "photographic selfhood" project I came up with at the end of last year. Each time I've started to write something, I've been interrupted by some pressing concern. Right now I have a half dozen fragments waiting to be fleshed out and no time in the foreseeable future in which I'll be able to complete them to my satisfaction. But that doesn't mean I'm not thinking about the project.

What I've decided to do in the interim, is go through my archives to find photographs that make me especially proud. Most of them won't fall into the category of self-portraiture in any obvious way, but because I am happy to see the care I take with the camera reflected in them, they still tell a story of the person I would like to see myself become. Here is the first batch of shots, many of which have an abstract quality from the standpoint of composition. All have appeared in my Live Journal previously. it never hurts to give them a second look, though.

The men's showers at an old gym on the Arizona State University campus

An iris in bloom at my old house when I was visiting my dad in May 2010 when my mother was still in the rehab facility after her fall

The bedroom that used to be mine before it was painted pink

A sideways Rothko found on our freshly painted wall in the front room

Rain from a midday cloudburst pooling up on the metal table outside our front door

Skylar looking through a fence at one of the peacocks at the San Diego Zoo

An industrial space rendered serene by the light

That first image - so archetypical! and so emotionally ambiguous.

Thanks for commenting!

I wanted it to make people shudder; I was pleased because it makes me shudder.

All great stuff. You should be putting it in frames.

Thanks! I might do just that. I need to do a better job of making my photos transcend the computer.

I love this group of images.

Thank you! I am proud of them, especially when viewed en masse like this, out of their original context.

You should be proud - these are stunning. And I don't remember ever seeing #3 and #7, which are wonderfully spooky. The latter has a Tenderloiny feel to it, and not just on account of the old beadboard. I love how the fan presides over the scene like a totem.

I miss your photography, so it's good to know this is just one of a series.

Thank you! #3 is definitely spooky. Or at least I planned it to be. #7 makes me feel at peace, actually, but that might have more to do with where I took it and under what circumstances than the image itself.

Fantastic. I'm drawn to the first and third especially for some reason, but the details in two and four (especially of the water, which has such texture) and the light in the bottom one are great too. They're all really compelling--and like quuf, I'm glad this is the first in a series.

I am so glad to hear from you. I'm wondering whether all these photos -- or the others I will post -- can be grouped together under the rubric of a personal style. I love them all, but have a hard time finding connections between them that go beyond my being so proud of the results.

These are great! That first one is stunning, really.

Thank you! The first one scares me. And I took it. I love how that sliver of light on the left side disrupts the balance.

I really like them! Red wall and the last one are really good, I like the first one too. Thanks for sharing :)

And thanks for commenting!

As hastily put together as this entry was -- after months of planning for something more sophisticated -- it helped to break me out of a funk.
