Fireflies in the Cherry Orchard
It's not much of an orchard now, except in the Chekovian sense, but this IS where the most viable remaining sour cherry trees stand in the backyard of my parents' Maryland home. I walked outside in the middle of the night to take in those wonderful East Coast night sounds, not expecting the fireflies to be out at that hour, since they are mostly visible around dusk, but there, clustered under the tree, in the most dew-soaked portions of the grass, a bunch of them were flitting about

Thank you! I had to play around quite a bit with exposures. It wasn't until the first light of dawn was starting to seep around the horizon in the east that I could get the right look.

Wait a minute, do we have fireflies in Tucson?!

Alas, no. I don't think they are found very far west of the Mississippi. I was in Maryland very briefly at the end of June dealing with a situation at my parents' house, which is where I took this. They are so amazing!

Oh, that's lovely! I saw one firefly - just one - when I was in Boston last month; it was the first I'd seen since I was in Ohio 17 years ago, and very much worth the wait.

I've heard that they're scarcer now, but my parents' woods-edged backyard was full of them. There are few things better in the world!

I love fireflies. Beauty. Reminds me of being a kid & sheer wonder & everything is okay. I love it.

Me too. It's not like I'd forgotten about their existence -- I made a point of introducing my daughter to them on East Coast visits back in 2005 and 2006 -- but my breath was still taken away when I wandered outside at my parents' house in Maryland, amid a very short and stressful stay, to see the glowing lights.
